Six MTN employees accused of stealing 3.1 billion shillings have been sentenced to nine years in prison by the head of Anti-Corruption Court Justice Paul Mugamba.
The judge also ordered police to refund to MTN over 800 million shillings that was recovered from the convicts’ homes.
Judge Mugamba cautioned that cyber crime is on rise and public ought to learn that crimes does not pay.
Justice Mugamba added that though the convicts were remorseful but they should pay for what they have done.
He also found out that most of the money lost was recovered by MTN by reversing the stolen amounts from mobile money agents accounts to its company account.
Yesterday the six were convicted of electronic fraud, theft conspiracy to commit a felony and unauthorized access of MTN Computers.
The convicts are Iren Kauma, Peter Ayebare, Joseph Magombe, Daniel Segujja, Edris Serunkuma and Edgar Matovu.
They committed the offense on January 25, 2013 at the MTN offices along Yusuf Lule road in Kampala.
