By Damali Mukhaye.

Public universities have spoken out on the move by the Uganda Revenue Authority to start collecting their students’ tuition across the country on behalf of the government.

This is after the ministry of finance instructed the tax body to collect tuition citing misuse of funds and failure to effectively collect these monies from defaulters among other issues.

Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe says if URA takes over fees collection, management will be relieved.

He however questions how the authority will manage fees defaulters since the URA officials do not know the students’ academic status to ensure they pay.

Meanwhile, the Academic Registrar Gulu University Jerry Bagaya and KCCA council member representing Kyambogo University Buruhani Byaruhanga say they have not been briefed about how this new system will ork.
