As the world celebrates former South African president Nelson Mandela’s birthday today, the country’s High Commissioner to Uganda Prof Lekoa Solly Mollo has said the day is not just an event but rather a way of life.

Anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela who died in 2013 was born on July 18th 1918 and would have turned 100 today.

Prof Mollo says there will be a series of centennial activities aimed at serving and making people’s lives better.

These include planting of trees at Mandela National Stadium, cleaning, donation of sanitary pads and other scholastic materials to pupils.

Pof Mollo appeals to everyone to honor Mandela’s legacy by living a life that has purpose and responsibility.

As part of the activities, on Friday, South African musician Yvone Chaka Chaka will address children at Bweyogerere Muslim Primary school in Kampala before holding a concert at the Kampala Serena Hotel whose proceeds will go to Shule Foundation, which education to children in rural areas.

Earlier while speaking during the Nelson Mandela Memorial Lecture in Johannesburg, South Africa, former US president Barack Obama challenged African leaders to embrace inclusive development if income inequality is to be addressed at continental level.

The 2017 Oxfam report showed that more than 80 per cent of all the wealth generated globally, flowed into the coffers of the richest one percent.

Obama said said the rich must take a step to reach out to the majority poor if Africa is to grow inclusively.
