Security has been beefed up at the Ugandan border with South Sudan after suspected armed South Sudanese rustlers shot dead a local farmer in Lamwo district before looting his animals.

The deceased, identified as 45 year old Johnson Olweny, a resident of Lutuko village, Madi Opei Sub-County was reportedly shot dead from his garden while grazing animals.

The Lamwo Resident District Commissioner Jonathan Rutabingwa says the suspected rustlers fled with the looted animals to Torit state in South Sudan after killing the farmer.

He noted that the unknown gunmen sneaked into Uganda through the porous boundary corridors between Agoro and Madi-Opei Sub-Counties neighboring the war torn South Sudan.

According to the fourth Infantry Division Spokesperson Maj Telesphor Turyamumanya, security forces comprising of the Police Anti Stock Theft Unit and the UPDF Soldiers have been able to repulse the attackers and are now deployed along the border points to avoid repeat of the incident.
