By Samuel Ssebuliba.

The Leader of Opposition in Parliament Winnie Kiiza has asked government to completely drop the tax imposed on mobile money transactions.

The call comes as their counterparts from the ruling NRM caucus head to State House Entebbe to discuss the president’s proposal to cut tax from 1% to 0.5% before the matter is tabled before the House tomorrow.

Addressing a news conference at parliament this afternoon, Kiiza says such immoral taxes can be avoided if the government stops wasteful expenditure

She also calls on her fellow legislators to reject the vehicles that the president has promised them for enhancement of their security saying such gestures end up over burdening the tax payer.

The finance ministry will tomorrow present on the floor of parliament an excise duty amendment bill 2018 that seeks to among other things; see tax on mobile money transactions reduce from 1% to 0.5%.

Government expects to collect Shs 118 billion as revenue from the new charge.
