The Ministry of Health has revealed that condom use in the country has gone down.

Ministry of Health says condom use significantly went down in Uganda during the lockdown resulting in an increase in unwanted pregnancy cases reported during the time.

This is attributed to the movement restrictions, which had been put in place during the period of the lockdown.

According to Vastha Kibirige, programming coordinator at the ministry of health, while officiating at the free condom distribution exercise, at Katanga slum area organized by care Uganda, the country uses 18 million condoms every month and this translates to over 200 million condoms which the country requires each year.

The free condom distribution exercise was among the activities organized ahead, as the country prepares to mark the international condom day which is marked every 13th of February.

She says of the sexually active population in need of condoms, only 33% have access to them.

Currently, about 1.4 million Ugandans live with HIV, and out of them, 1.2 million are on treatment.
