{"id":74242,"date":"2024-05-08T08:50:29","date_gmt":"2024-05-08T05:50:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kfm.co.ug\/?p=74242"},"modified":"2024-05-08T11:53:54","modified_gmt":"2024-05-08T08:53:54","slug":"karuma-slowly-turns-into-ghost-town-after-bridge-closure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kfm.dembefm.ug\/staging_h\/karuma-slowly-turns-into-ghost-town-after-bridge-closure\/","title":{"rendered":"Karuma slowly turns into ghost town after bridge closure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Karuma Bridge was closed for rehabilitation works, the area is quickly turning into a ghost town<\/p>\n<p>According to KFM\u2019s Bill Oketch, in Karuma Town, there are dozens of lodges, eating and drinking places with no customers.<\/p>\n<p>The town, approximately 2.7 kilometres by road \u2013 north of Karuma Falls \u2013 has a deserted parking yard for heavy-duty automobiles, and billboards advertising patient-friendly health facilities and farm inputs \u2013 with almost no one to see them.<\/p>\n<p>Edith Kafuko, Karuma Town Clerk, said the closure of the bridge has impacted revenue generation, livelihood of roadside workers and journey times.<\/p>\n<p>She says that specifically, the area where the Lira\u2013Kamdini\u2013Karuma Road connects to the Kampala\u2013Karuma Road and the Karuma\u2013Olwiyo\u2013Pakwach\u2013Nebbi\u2013Arua Road, is slowly dying out after accommodation and restaurant clients in truck drivers and bus passengers were diverted on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The diversion of heavy-duty vehicles away from the defective Karuma Bridge has significantly reduced traffic volume, and further brought business to its knees on the Kampala-Gulu highway.<\/p>\n<p>Police in Karuma Town Council estimate that more than 300 heavy-duty automobiles, including lorries, buses and trailers, drive over the 61-year-old facility every day.<\/p>\n<p>The country\u2019s roads agency recently announced the bridge\u2019s redevelopment project would be undertaken within three months after its closure on May 6, 2024.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Karuma Bridge was closed for rehabilitation works, the area is quickly turning into a ghost town According to KFM\u2019s Bill Oketch, in Karuma Town, there are dozens of lodges, eating and drinking places with no customers.
