{"id":73816,"date":"2024-03-19T12:10:27","date_gmt":"2024-03-19T09:10:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kfm.co.ug\/?p=73816"},"modified":"2024-03-19T12:10:27","modified_gmt":"2024-03-19T09:10:27","slug":"fallen-head-of-busoga-clans-replaced-ahead-of-burial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kfm.dembefm.ug\/staging_h\/fallen-head-of-busoga-clans-replaced-ahead-of-burial\/","title":{"rendered":"Fallen head of Busoga clans replaced ahead of burial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>By Denis Edema<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Busoga Kingdom clan executives from the 11 chiefdoms have appointed Mr Richard Mafumo, the monarchy\u2019s Minister for Culture, to replace late Keith Mutengu as the head of all clan heads (Isabakungania).<\/p>\n<p>Mr Mutengu passed away on Sunday morning at Jinja Regional Referral Hospital at the age of 88, with palace sources saying he had been suffering from hypertension and stroke.<\/p>\n<p>Mr David Lwiigo Igulu Isabirye, the Busoga clan spokesperson, while meeting Busoga clan leaders at Kingdom headquarters in Bugembe, said the clan executives\u00a0selected Mr Mafumo, whose appointment takes immediate effect.<\/p>\n<p>According to Mr Lwiigo, Mr Mafumo\u2019s appointment\u00a0is in line with the constitution of the clan.<\/p>\n<p>He added that Mr Mafumo will only hold one title, meaning he will relinquish his portfolio as Minister for Culture because as the \u201cgrandfather of Busoga\u201d, he cannot be sent to perform any activity, but to head clanship affairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs this has happened, he will at an appropriate time, inform Kyabazinga William Nadiope Gabula IV of the appointment as the new\u00a0clan head of Busoga, not as Minister for Culture,\u201d Mr Lwiigo said on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Mafumo says he is thankful to the clan executive committee for their \u201cwisdom\u201d in putting him into that position. \u201cI promise to work together with the same executive. As clan leader, I will\u00a0move Busoga forward in promoting peace, culture and development,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, Mr Mafumo\u00a0described his deceased predecessor as a person who has been a strong pillar of Busoga Kingdom and as a person who fought for unity among Busoga, especially during the period\u00a0when the Kingdom\u00a0was disunited due to leadership wrangles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has contributed to the development of this nation, Busoga Kingdoms and clans in particular, and has been a good leader and stronger pillar of the Kingdom,\u2019\u2019 he said immediately after Mr Mutengu\u2019s death was officially announced by the Kingdom spokesperson, Mr Andrew Ntange.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Ntange said the deceased will on Tuesday (today) lie in state in the Busoga Parliament (<em>Lukiiko<\/em>), after which the\u00a0body will be taken to Christ Church Cathedral, and later to his home in Kiwampere village, Bulopa sub-county, Kamuli District for a night vigil and burial on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Mutengu was the first Prime Minister of Busoga Kingdom when the National Resistance Movement (NRM) restored cultural institutions, largely serving in that position during the reign of the late Kyabazinga Henry Wako Muloki.<\/p>\n<p>The former Member of Parliament (MP) of Kagoma County in Jinja District, Mr Frank Nabwiso, described the deceased as \u201ca cultural person who\u00a0loved his clan, culture and literature\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>According to Mr Nabwiso, Mr Mutengu, whom he also referred to as\u00a0Difasi Bamulanzeki,\u00a0in 1952 went through Busoga College Mwiri, joined Kyambogo Teachers\u2019 Training College where he graduated in 1958 as Grade III teacher.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Mutengu later joined Busoga College Mwiri as a teacher and taught for a number of years until he got a scholarship to study at University of Leicester in the United Kingdom, specialising in English.<\/p>\n<p>According to Mr Nabwiso, Mr Mutengu later joined Makerere University in 1966 for a Degree in Literature and graduated in 1968, and was posted to head the Junior Secondary School in Mpumudde and later taken to Busoga College Mwiri as acting head teacher in 1969.<\/p>\n<p>In the late 1970, he was taken to a school in\u00a0Bugisu sub-region, where he was appointed Senior Education Officer in the Ministry of Education.<\/p>\n<p>In 1986, he was posted to Jinja Senior Secondary School until 1993 when the NRM restored kingship and he became the first Prime Minister of Busoga Kingdom up to 1988.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Nabwiso credits Mr Mutengu for fighting for the return of Busoga Kingdom property and assets that were confiscated by the government in 1966, including the Igenge Palace among others.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Denis Edema Busoga Kingdom clan executives from the 11 chiefdoms have appointed Mr Richard Mafumo, the monarchy\u2019s Minister for Culture, to replace late Keith Mutengu as the head of all clan heads (Isabakungania).
