The Katikkiro (prime <\/span>minister) of Buganda has lauded the <\/span>Nation Media Group (NMG) for join<\/span>ing the fight to ensure an HIV-free <\/span>generation. <\/span>Mr Charles Peter Mayiga, who <\/span>launched the Kabaka Birthday Run <\/span>yesterday at Bulange in Mengo, urged <\/span>other institutions to join the fight <\/span>against the epidemic.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Nation Media Group, represent<\/span>ed by its newly-appointed managing <\/span>director, Ms Susan Nsibirwa, is one of <\/span>the sponsors of the 11th edition of <\/span>the Kabaka Birthday Run that has <\/span>been set for April 7.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe welcome partners like Nation <\/span>Media Group, who share our vision,\u201d <\/span>Mr Mayiga said.<\/span><\/p>\n

He also commend<\/span>ed other partners, who included Air<\/span>tel Uganda, I&M Bank, Nivana Water, <\/span>UNAIDs, and the Uganda Aids Com<\/span>mission. <\/span>The UN programme on HIV\/Aids <\/span>(Unaids) named Kabaka Muwenda <\/span>Mutebi as goodwill ambassador for <\/span>East and Southern Africa in the fight <\/span>against HIV\/Aids and Buganda King <\/span>dom has since championed the fight <\/span>against the pandemic. He was first <\/span>appointed in 2017 for three years and <\/span>was reappointed in 2020 for three <\/span>more years. <\/span>Proceeds from Kabaka Birthday <\/span>Run have previously been used to <\/span>tackle medical conditions such as fis<\/span>tula and sickle cell.<\/span><\/p>\n

Katikkiro Mayiga said: \u201cOur vision is <\/span>to bring about social and economic <\/span>transformation for the people in the <\/span>kingdom and Uganda. We want our <\/span>people to have a happy and decent <\/span>livelihood, but the major factor that <\/span>is going to determine this is health, <\/span>especially that of the ordinary per<\/span>son because they contribute signifi<\/span>cantly to the growth of any country.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe, therefore, join the efforts of the <\/span>international community, Unaids, <\/span>the Uganda Aids Commission, and <\/span>all people involved in promoting our <\/span>health in the fight against HIV\/Aids. <\/span>And we should all be happy because <\/span>the Kabaka is a good ambassador for <\/span>the African continent,\u201dhe added.<\/span><\/p>\n

This year\u2019s theme, \u201cMen to fight <\/span>against HIV\/Aids to save the girl <\/span>child,\u201d urges men and male youth to <\/span>take charge. <\/span>The UN\u2019s Sustainable Development <\/span>Goal 3 (SDG 3) aims to ensure healthy <\/span>lives and promote well-being for all <\/span>at all ages.<\/span><\/p>\n

The World Health Organisation <\/span>says Uganda has recorded significant <\/span>reduction in new HIV infections but <\/span>the war is far from over. The global <\/span>health body says while there is a dip <\/span>in infections, a lot more remains to <\/span>be done.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
