The Department for Edu- cation said that the move was \u201cpart of the government\u2019s plan to minimise disruption and improve behavior in classrooms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Statistics show that 97 per- cent of students own a mobile phone by the age of 12. Additionally, a third of secondary school pupils reported mobile phones being used in most lessons without permission, while one in five pupils have experienced online bullying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSchools are places for children to learn and mobile phones are, at a minimum, an unwanted distraction in the classroom,\u201d Education Secretary Gillian Keegan said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Mobile phone-free In the guidance, there were examples of approaches to achieve a mobile phone-free environment, including banning phones from the school premises, handing in phones on arrival at school, and keeping phones securely locked away at school.<\/p>\n<p>The guidance also suggested that headteachers or authorised staff\u201chave a statutory power to search a pupil or their possessions\u201d if they have reasonable grounds to suspect the stu<span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">dent is in possession of a pro- <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">hibited item.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">However,the guidance is non<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">statutory, meaning it does not <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">have the force of law itself.
