The acting Commission<\/span>er for Youth and Children Affairs in the <\/span>Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social <\/span>Development, Mr Franco Tollea, has <\/span>said child toll free helpline 116 is over<\/span>whelmed by a huge number of calls <\/span>from children and adults reporting <\/span>cases of violence.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking to the media at the Nation<\/span>al Symposium on Fostering Child pro<\/span>tection and response to Cross-Cutting <\/span>issues in Kampala on Friday, Mr Tollea <\/span>said on a monthly basis, the child hel<\/span>pline dubbed 116 Sauti receives more <\/span>than 300 calls every month.<\/span><\/p>\n

He noted that physical violence tops <\/span>the cases reported, followed by sexual <\/span>violence such as defilement.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cGovernment doesn\u2019t take these con<\/span>cerns lightly. The Ministry of Gender, <\/span>Labour and Social Development has <\/span>laws, policies and guidelines that en<\/span>hance the wellbeing of a child, includ<\/span>ing protecting children from all forms <\/span>of abuse and exploitation. That is why we put in place this toll free helpline to get to know what is happening in different parts of the country and respond immediately,\u201dhe said.<\/span><\/p>\n

In terms of regional distribution, Mr Tollea said majority of the calls come from central Uganda, followed by northern Uganda. Sauti is a Kiswahili word which means voice. Through Sauti child helpline, community members, victims of violence and duty bearers report cases of child abuse and rights violations so that children\u2019s protection needs are responded to.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr Tollea was also concerned about the growing burden of child labour in the country. This, he said, was worsened during the Covid-19 pandemic where thousands of children were forced to fend for families when movements were restricted to contain the spread of the viral disease, rendering their parents and guardians jobless.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cChildren are subjected to all forms of work that are hazardous to their life, detrimental to their growth and development. If a child has been abused, they may not cope with the tasks of life such as going to school and attaining the necessary knowledge and skills,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr Tollea, however, said policies, especially the National Child Policy of 2020, which was approved at the peak of the lockdown, must be scaled up in all local governments to enable them respond and prevent violence against children.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
