Gender minister Betty Amongi has <\/span>said many male bosses in private <\/span>and public organisations are using <\/span>foreign trips to corner their female <\/span>staff and force them into sex.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ms Amongi said this common form of <\/span>sexual harassment is hindering promo<\/span>tion of gender equality practices at work <\/span>places.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c… the boss has a trip abroad in UK to<\/span>go and work and he has been making a <\/span>pass at you, then he says,\u2018let\u2019s take a trip <\/span>together.\u2019And you reach UK, you have not <\/span>been to UK and your rooms are next to <\/span>each other, strategically,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThen now,there you start saying,\u2018what <\/span>do I do? This is London,I don\u2019t know any- <\/span>body,\u2019who are you going to report to?\u201dshe <\/span>added.<\/span><\/p>\n

The minister said at this moment, even <\/span>the female staff who has been resisting <\/span>past advances is cornered and gives in.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSo those are the simple things we are <\/span>talking about.When you have a colleague <\/span>who is working and you are a man and <\/span>you have the power,this person is vulner<\/span>able. And so, you use your power to har<\/span>ass us sexually in a workplace and tie it to <\/span>promotion, tie it to giving us trips, and so <\/span>many things,\u201d she added.<\/span><\/p>\n

The minister was speaking in Kampa<\/span>la on Friday during the Gender Equality <\/span>Seal Awards organised by the United Na<\/span>tions Development Programme (UNDP) <\/span>and Private Sector Foundation of Ugan<\/span>da (PSFU).<\/span><\/p>\n

At the ceremony, 40 private sector com<\/span>panies were awarded with the Gen<\/span>der Equality Seal (GES) Gold, Silver and <\/span>Bronze certification for promoting in<\/span>vestment in systems that integrate gen<\/span>der equality within workplaces and busi<\/span>ness strategies.Another 50 companies re<\/span>ceived recognition for undertaking steps <\/span>within the GES certification. <\/span>Minister Amongi hailed the private <\/span>sector companies for promoting gender <\/span>equality.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFor companies that have partic<\/span>ipated,I want to thank you,I want to con<\/span>gratulate you, and I want to encourage <\/span>you to set an example for other compa<\/span>nies,\u201d she added.<\/span><\/p>\n
