{"id":70913,"date":"2023-11-27T09:15:19","date_gmt":"2023-11-27T06:15:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kfm.co.ug\/?p=70913"},"modified":"2023-11-27T09:15:19","modified_gmt":"2023-11-27T06:15:19","slug":"judiciary-interdicts-chief-magistrate-accused-of-corruption","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kfm.dembefm.ug\/staging_h\/judiciary-interdicts-chief-magistrate-accused-of-corruption\/","title":{"rendered":"Judiciary interdicts chief magistrate accused of corruption"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Precious Delilah<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The Judiciary has inter<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">dicted the Mitooma Chief Magistrate, Ms <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Sylvia Nvanungi, who was last week ar<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">raigned before court and charged over a <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Shs2.5m bribe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Speaking to this publication yesterday, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the Judiciary\u2019s spokesperson, Mr James <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Ereemye Mawanda, said under the Pub<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">lic Service Standing Orders, once a judicial officer is charged before court in a case involving moral turpitude, they are automatically interdicted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cBy reason of being charged in court over an offense involving moral turpitude under the Public Standing Service Orders, the officer is put on interdiction until the matter is sorted out in court,\u201d Mr Ereemye said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">He also revealed that the magistrate in question will,going forward while on interdiction, be earning half pay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Chief Magistrates earn about Shs7m <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">per month, meaning Ms Nvanungi will <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">now be earning about Shs3.5m until her <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">matter is resolved in court with either a <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cconviction\u201dor an \u201cacquittal\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cFor now, we will allow the court to do <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">its work and the due course will be ac<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">corded to the person charged. While on <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">interdiction, the officer will be getting <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">half pay.\u201dMr Ereemye added. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">According to the Public Service Stand<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ing Orders, an interdiction is the temporary removal of a public officer from exercising his or her duties while an investigation over a particular matter is being carried out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">On Wednesday last week, Magistrate Nvanungi, alongside Ms Jackline Bako, the Resident State Attorney of Sembabule court, were arrested by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit in connection with alleged soliciting and receiving of bribes from different persons undergoing trial before court in Sembabule District.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">They were subsequently arraigned before the Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala. They denied the charges. They were remanded to Luzira prison where they spent a night before being released on bail last Thursday.
