Muslims at the Gaddafi Na<\/span>tional Mosque in Old Kampa<\/span>la held their Jumah (Friday <\/span>prayers) amid heightened se- <\/span>curity due to reports of a planned pro<\/span>test by a section of the Muslim com<\/span>munity. The protest is against the al- <\/span>leged sale of Muslim properties. <\/span><\/p>\n

Similar incidents played out at sever<\/span>al mosques affiliated with the faction <\/span>of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Coun-<\/span>
cil (UMSC). <\/span>In the early hours of Friday morning, <\/span>the police and other security forces,in<\/span>cluding the military, deployed in and <\/span>around the Gaddafi Mosque, which al<\/span>so serves as the headquarters for the <\/span>UMSC leadership.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje, <\/span>the Mufti of Uganda, and the leader<\/span>ship of the UMSC are jointly accused <\/span>of mortgaging several Muslim com<\/span>munity properties. These properties <\/span>are set to be auctioned following a<\/span>
High Court order. <\/span><\/p>\n

By 12pm on Friday, Muslims had <\/span>started gathering at Old Kampala <\/span>to attend prayers. Thorough search- <\/span>es were conducted on all individuals <\/span>accessing the mosque premises. The <\/span>heightened security measures also af- <\/span>fected businesses around the mosque, <\/span>as people were tense in anticipation <\/span>of potential unrest.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Jumah prayers commenced <\/span>promptly at 1pm in the presence of <\/span>Sheikh Mubajje and other top UMSC <\/span>leaders. The prayers proceeded with- <\/span>out interruption to the end. <\/span>Unrest <\/span>Immediately after the prayers, a <\/span>scuffle ensued when former Nsan<\/span>gi Municipality Mayor Hajji Abdul Ki<\/span>yimba, a top leader in the community<\/span>, stood up and started shouting “<\/span>Al-<\/span>lahu Akbar (God is the greatest)\u201d mov<\/span>ing toward Sheikh Mubajje. Security <\/span>personnel restrained him before he <\/span>reached his target and whisked him <\/span>away,along with another unidentified <\/span>man, to Kampala Central Police Sta<\/span>tion where they remained detained <\/span>by press time. <\/span><\/p>\n

Addressing the media after the scuf<\/span>fle, the Kampala Metropolitan Po<\/span>lice spokesperson, Mr Patrick Onyan- <\/span>go, said the police had beefed up se<\/span>curity at the mosque following intel<\/span>ligence reports of an imminent raid <\/span>by the faction opposed to Mubajje and <\/span>his leadership.<\/span><\/p>\n
