The head of Child and <\/span>Family Affairs Unit at Ntinda Police Sta<\/span>tion, Ms Suzan Ngolobe, has warned <\/span>the public against employing underage <\/span>maids.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking to the media while com<\/span>memorating the 16 days of activism <\/span>against gender-based violence (GBV) <\/span>in Kampala yesterday, Ms Ngolobe said <\/span>there is a need to end child labour and <\/span>abuse of children\u2019s rights.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have embarked on working with <\/span>communities in searching for people <\/span>hiring underaged maids because we<\/span>
have realised many are suffering but <\/span>they do not know where to report and <\/span>even others end up getting injured,\u201dshe <\/span>said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ms Miria Matembe, a former Ethics <\/span>minister, said implementation of the <\/span>existing policies is still a challenge.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to work with authorities <\/span>to make sure that the culprits and the <\/span>parents of the victim are cautioned and <\/span>face the law because this affects their <\/span>future and some of them get injured <\/span>due to heavy duties,\u201dMs Matembe said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ms Alizabeth Ampairwe the director <\/span>of programmes at the Forum for Wom<\/span>en in Democracy, said the Ministry of <\/span>Gender, Labour and Social Develop<\/span>ment should prioritise the recruitment <\/span>of more staff in \u201cthe community-based <\/span>services departments in local govern<\/span>ments to at least 70 percent in the short <\/span>term to reduce negative practices \u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n
