{"id":70607,"date":"2023-11-15T08:15:59","date_gmt":"2023-11-15T05:15:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kfm.co.ug\/?p=70607"},"modified":"2023-11-15T08:15:59","modified_gmt":"2023-11-15T05:15:59","slug":"security-tightened-at-border-with-drc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kfm.dembefm.ug\/staging_h\/security-tightened-at-border-with-drc\/","title":{"rendered":"Security tightened at border with DRC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Longino Muhindo &amp; Alex Ashaba<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Security has been beefed up at <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the border districts of Bundibu<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">gyo and Ntoroko to prevent Allied <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">from crossing into Uganda. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The development follows a Sunday <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">night attack by suspected ADF rebels in <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">eastern Democratic Republic of Congo <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">(DRC).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The incident, which occurred in <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Kichanga, Watalinga County inside <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">DRC, approximately 20 kilometres <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">from the Ugandan border in Bundibu<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">gyo, prompted an influx of Congolese <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">refugees into Uganda. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">As of midday yesterday, the number <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of refugees had risen to 1,202 from the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">1,000 who arrived on Monday evening, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">according to the director of commu<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">nication at the Uganda Red Cross, Ms <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Irene Nakasiita.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cOur volunteers are instructed to <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">guide refugees to the designated tran<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">sit centre, Bubukwanga Transit Camp <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">in Bundibugyo District. Simultaneous<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ly, some refugees may still opt to use po<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">rous entry points. We have deployed <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">our volunteers to various entry points <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">to provide guidance and extend hu<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">manitarian assistance,\u201d Ms Nakasita <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">She said of the 1,202 refugees who <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">had crossed into Uganda, 293 are adults <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">above 18 years (128 males and 165 fe<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">males), 293 children aged zero to four <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">(193 males and 200 females), and 516 <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">children aged five to 17 years (275 males <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and 241 females).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Security operatives have since been <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">deployed at all border points, including <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">porous borders on River Lamia. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Lt Col Alex Bright, the Bundibugyo <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Resident District Commissioner, who <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">doubles as head of security, said secu<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">rity personnel had been deployed at <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">at the porous borders of Bundingoma Busunga, Kachiri, Butoogho, and Kazoroho.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Longino Muhindo &amp; Alex Ashaba Security has been beefed up at the border districts of Bundibugyo and Ntoroko to prevent Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels from crossing into Uganda.
