The United Kingdom is to compensatethe relatives of a British <\/span>citizen and his wife, who were killed in <\/span>a terror attack in Queen Elizabeth Na<\/span>tional Park in Western Uganda. <\/span>British citizen David Barlow, his South <\/span>African wife Emmaretia Geyer and Eric <\/span>Alyai, their Ugandan tour guide, were <\/span>shot dead by suspected Allied Demo<\/span>cratic Forces rebels on October 17.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, the relatives of the Ugandan <\/span>victim Alyai aren\u2019t eligible for compen<\/span>sation since he was not a British citizen <\/span>or closely related to a British national. <\/span>In a statement issued on Friday, the <\/span>United Kingdom (UK) government said <\/span>the Queen Elizabeth National Park in<\/span>cident has been designated as an act <\/span>of terrorism by the foreign office and, <\/span>therefore, victims can apply for com<\/span>pensation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cApplications can be made to the <\/span>Criminal Injuries Compensation Au<\/span>thority (CICA) under the Victims of <\/span>Overseas Terrorism Compensation <\/span>Scheme 2012 (VOTCS) by those victims <\/span>injured, or the families of those killed, <\/span>in the attack,\u201d the statement reads.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Section 11 of the UK <\/span>Criminal Injuries Compensation <\/span>Scheme 2012, only British, their close <\/span>relatives or a national of a member <\/span>state of the European Union or the Eu<\/span>ropean Economic Area are eligible for <\/span>compensation.<\/span><\/p>\n

The killers of the trio were suspected <\/span>to be five. They haven\u2019t yet been traced <\/span>by security agencies since, but the hunt <\/span>is ongoing. <\/span>Dr Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister of <\/span>ICT and National Guidance, last week <\/span>said Cabinet made a resolution to name <\/span>Ugandan roads after the deceased tour<\/span>ists as a way to honour them.<\/span><\/p>\n

He said they were in talks with their <\/span>counterpart of the UK government on <\/span>supporting the bereaved families. <\/span>The minister also said they would sup<\/span>port the family of the Ugandan who <\/span>was killed in the same incident.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
