I<\/span>n less than three months, Uganda is <\/span>expected to join three other African <\/span>countries where an injectable drug <\/span>has been approved for HIV\/Aids pre<\/span>vention. <\/span>News of the significant development <\/span>was revealed yesterday by the Uganda <\/span>Aids Commission (UAC), hailing it as an <\/span>effective, safe and more user-friendly <\/span>disease prevention measure compared <\/span>to existing options.<\/span><\/p>\n

The long-lasting injectable cabote<\/span>gravir (CAB-LA) has been confirmed <\/span>to be effective and is already being con- <\/span>sidered as key to national efforts to re<\/span>duce the health burden of HIV\/Aids, <\/span>which claimed 17,000 lives in Uganda <\/span>last year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking in an interview in Kampa<\/span>la on Monday, Dr Daniel Byamukama, <\/span>head of the HIV prevention division at <\/span>the Commission, said UAC plans to roll <\/span>out the drug early next year.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have made orders using the Glo<\/span>bal Fund for [HIV\/Aids, Malaria and Tu<\/span>berculosis] for injectable pre-exposure <\/span>prophylaxis (PrEP). You take one injec<\/span>tion every two months. If you are HIV <\/span>negative you will not contract HIV,\u201d Dr <\/span>Byamukama said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are targeting 10,000 people in <\/span>the first year, and we are increasing by <\/span>10,000 in the subsequent years to be <\/span>benefiting from this. But if the need is <\/span>so high, I promise that we shall make it <\/span>available,\u201d he said without indicating <\/span>what criteria will be used to pick the <\/span>very first beneficiaries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
