The Alliance for Nation<\/span>al Transformation (ANT) party Secre<\/span>tary General, Ms Alice Alaso, has tasked <\/span>the Electoral Commission to expedite <\/span>the process of displaying the roadmap <\/span>for the Local Council elections so that <\/span>women can be encouraged to engage in <\/span>the pending election process.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ms Alaso said: \u201cWe are concerned al<\/span>ready. If the Electoral Commission had <\/span>given us a roadmap for elections, our <\/span>voices would be going around to say if a <\/span>woman lines behind a different person, <\/span>please don\u2019t beat them. Unfortunately, <\/span>the roadmap is not coming.\u201d <\/span>She made the remarks during the <\/span>handover of the Interparty Women <\/span>Platform (IWOP) leadership from the <\/span>ANT party to the Democratic Party (DP) <\/span>at a ceremony held at ANT\u2019s offices in <\/span>Kampala last week.<\/span><\/p>\n

IWOP, which comprises ten registered <\/span>political parties, aims at building an ef<\/span>fective platform for women to influence <\/span>the political culture and promote a ho<\/span>listic well-being of society through rota<\/span>tional leadership. The parties include <\/span>the National Resistance Movement, DP, <\/span>ANT, Uganda People\u2019s Congress, Ecolog<\/span>ical Party of Uganda, Forum for Demo<\/span>cratic Change Justice Forum, Peoples\u2019 <\/span>Progressive Party, Uganda Federal Alli- <\/span>ance and Conservative Party.<\/span><\/p>\n

The EC recently disowned a pro<\/span>gramme that was said to be the ap<\/span>proved schedule for the election of LC <\/span>1, LC II and women councils. <\/span>Efforts to get a comment from Elector<\/span>al Commission\u2019s spokesperson, Mr Paul <\/span>Bukenya, were futile press time.<\/span><\/p>\n

The term of office for Local Council I <\/span>and II expired on July 10. However, the <\/span>occupants of these offices were given <\/span>an extension of six months as the gov<\/span>ernment hunts for resources to facil<\/span>itate the exercise. The Prime Minister, <\/span>Ms Robinah Nabbanja recently said the <\/span>government needs Shs59 billion for the <\/span>elections.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
