The Uganda People\u2019s Defence Forc<\/span>es (UPDF) intends to enlist the <\/span>help of the local population in the <\/span>fight against Allied Democratic <\/span>Forces (ADF) rebels in parts of Rwenzori <\/span>Sub-region. <\/span>Maj Gen Dick Olum, the commander <\/span>of Operation Shuuja in eastern DR Con<\/span>go, said this does not mean arming civil<\/span>ians and sending them to the frontline <\/span>but rather relying on them in gathering <\/span>intelligence information.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Head of State in his directive does <\/span>not intend for Wanainchi to be armed <\/span>and sent to the frontlines to engage in <\/span>combat with ADF rebels,\u201dhe said yester<\/span>day in an interview with <\/span>Daily Monitor.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs a strategist, he emphasises the im<\/span>portance of human intelligence, which <\/span>involves people cooperating with the <\/span>UPDF to provide information. Human <\/span>intelligence is derived from the popula<\/span>tion, and this is our primary focus,\u201d Maj <\/span>Gen Olum added.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the weekend, President Museve<\/span>ni, in a social media post on X (former<\/span>ly Twitter), urged the UPDF to collabo- <\/span>rate with the police and the local pop<\/span>ulation (Wananchi) to track down sus- <\/span>pected ADF rebels who had crossed <\/span>from DR Congo into Kasese.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe UPDF should involve the Police <\/span>and the Wanainchi to hunt for these <\/span>groups, running from Congo. They are <\/span>no longer a military problem. They are; <\/span>Police, popular vigilance, and anti-ter<\/span>rorism efforts. We are destroying their <\/span>base in Congo,\u201dhe posted.<\/span><\/p>\n

This follows last week\u2019s attack on tour<\/span>ists in Queen Elizabeth National Park <\/span>and the torching of a lorry loaded with <\/span>onions in Kasese District. <\/span>The President revealed that on the <\/span>same day (Saturday),the UPDF bombed <\/span>another ADF camp in DRC.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
