A day after suspend<\/span>ing five Opposition lawmakers, Depu<\/span>ty Speaker Thomas Tayebwa yesterday <\/span>issued new guidelines, which, he said, <\/span>are aimed at restoring sanity in Parlia<\/span>ment.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr Tayebwa, in a lengthy communi<\/span>cation during plenary, said majority <\/span>of the legislators have chosen to break <\/span>some rules of procedure in the August <\/span>House.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf you want to challenge my rul<\/span>ing, the rules give you leeway. It is no <\/span>that I am the Alpha and Omega…<\/span>…I have a duty to protect the dignity <\/span>of this House and I will ensure that is <\/span>done but I request you, honourable col- <\/span>leagues, that we accommodate each <\/span>other,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr Tayebwa started with the issue of <\/span>the dress code, which he said the legis<\/span>lators have abused.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI will no longer allow wearing shirts <\/span>in the House because this is a place <\/span>of dignity. Only suits shall be allowed.<\/span>
I want us to properly apply what is <\/span>defined as African shirts, some are <\/span>bought in Europe, they are not even Af- <\/span>rican,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the Deputy Speaker, <\/span>some members during parliamenta<\/span>ry committees dress in jeans, trousers,<\/span>
sneakers and flat shoes, among others. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe want a full suit, it\u2019s not just a <\/span>shirt and you say this is African wear. <\/span>It should match, it should be a match- <\/span>ing suit, either safari, let\u2019s have it clear,\u201d <\/span>he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd for women, kindly try to be as <\/span>decent as possible,\u201d Mr Tayebwa add<\/span>ed<\/span><\/p>\n

Only those with special cases such as injuries, who will approach the Speaker prior to the sitting, will be allowed to attend the session, he stressed.<\/p>\n

Approaching the Speaker<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mr Tayebwa informed the legislators that there will be no more approaching the Speaker\u2019s chair from today as it has been. Only three members; the Prime Min<\/span>ister, the Leader of the Opposition and <\/span>the Government Chief Whip are now <\/span>free to approach the Speaker.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
