Former Inspector General of Po<\/span>lice, Gen (Rtd) Kale Kayihura, has <\/span>said he will not join elective politics <\/span>but rather will concentrate on farm<\/span>ing after retiring from the army. <\/span>Gen Kayihura made the remarks at his <\/span>homecoming event organised at Saaza <\/span>Grounds in Kisoro Municipality at the <\/span>weekend to celebrate his retirement from <\/span>the army.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI am not interested in elective politics <\/span>as some people had started speculating <\/span>that I was eyeing the Bufumbira East par<\/span>liamentary seat in Kisoro District. I fear <\/span>elective politics; even if it is an LC1 post, <\/span>I fear it. I have a lot of things to do in my <\/span>retirement, especially things to do with <\/span>farming,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gen Kayihura retired from the army <\/span>a day after he was acquitted of criminal <\/span>cases of illegal repatriation of Rwandan <\/span>refugees and failure to protect war mate<\/span>rials in the court martial. <\/span>At the weekend, Gen Kayihura said the <\/span>cases were trumped up against him. <\/span>He said President Museveni detected lies <\/span>made by people, whom he didn\u2019t name, <\/span>who wanted to blackmail him.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI am grateful that President Museveni <\/span>does not act on rumours and lies but he <\/span>takes his time to investigate. By the time <\/span>my issues ended, he was already aware of <\/span>the truth that I had no case to answer. It <\/span>is not true that I was pardoned, the fact <\/span>is I had no case to answer,\u201d Gen Kayihura <\/span>said.<\/span><\/p>\n

He listed some people who support<\/span>ed him during his trial. They are; Kisoro <\/span>District chairperson Abel Bizimana, the <\/span>former chairman of the court martial, <\/span>Gen Andrew Gutti, Chief of Defence Forc<\/span>es Gen Wilson Mbadi, State Minister for <\/span>Internal Affairs Gen David Muhoozi, Maj <\/span>Gen James Mugira, Maj Gen Sam Kavuma <\/span>and his lawyers.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSpecial comrades during my trou<\/span>bles include the first son, Gen Muhoo<\/span>zi Kainerugaba, Gen Salim Saleh Akand- <\/span>wanaho and his wife Jovia. These com<\/span>rades were there for me then and today,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI have since established that love is a strong weapon for promoting unity. In the Bible, the ten commandments are summarised as love God and love your neighbours as you love yourself. Love is important for humanity. I am grateful to my family members, my wife and children for being with me in my troubles,\u201d Gen Kayihura said.<\/span><\/p>\n

He added that he will remain a \u201cproud\u201d retired military officer till his death. Muhabura Diocese Bishop Godfrey Mbitse, Fr Emmanuel Safari from Kabale Diocese and Sheikh Bakore-Shafi Kahuba from Kisoro Muslim district led the ecumenical prayers at Gen Kayihura\u2019s homecoming.<\/span><\/p>\n
