Amidst minor in-House opposition, Parliament on Tuesday swiftly passed a legislation with stricter penalties for people engaged in same-sex activities in Uganda.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“This House\u00a0will not shy to restrict any right to the extent of the House that recognizes, protects and safeguards the sovereignty, morals and culture of this country,\u201d speaker Anita Among said after Parliament unanimously adopted the Bill.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Penalties under the new legislation include a 10-year-jail term for anyone who engages in\u00a0same-sex relationships or identifies as LGBTQ.<\/p>\n

The fresh anti-gay law,\u00a0which\u00a0previously met a court nullification\u00a0after it was lawed by President Museveni in 2014, returned to a nearly full 11th parliament on March 21 as 389\u00a0lawmakers were present in-person,\u00a0with about 55 MPs following proceedings on Zoom technology.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In what analysts termed as double-edged remarks,\u00a0President Museveni March 16 branded gay people as \u201cdeviants\u201d\u00a0but noted that Tuesday\u2019s amendments to the anti-gay law would be subjected to scientific findings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
