{"id":38246,"date":"2018-11-07T16:55:01","date_gmt":"2018-11-07T13:55:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kfm.co.ug\/?p=38246"},"modified":"2018-11-07T16:55:01","modified_gmt":"2018-11-07T13:55:01","slug":"mps-make-u-turn-on-gmo-bill-concede-to-m7-objections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kfm.dembefm.ug\/staging_h\/mps-make-u-turn-on-gmo-bill-concede-to-m7-objections\/","title":{"rendered":"MPs make U-turn on GMO Bill, concede to M7 objections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>By Moses Kyeyune.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Legislators on the Parliamentary Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation have changed their positions on the GMO Bill and considered proposals suggested by President Museveni, Daily Monitor has established.<\/p>\n<p>This comes after President Museveni declined to sign the Bill into law in December 2017, citing lack of clarity in the legislation.<\/p>\n<p>Parliament had earlier on October 4, 2017, passed the Bill for an Act entitled the \u201cBio-safety\u201d Act, 2OI7.<br \/>\nMuseveni, in his four paged letter dated December 21, 2017 expressed concern that the law had in the first place not been clearly named, saying that \u201cBio-safety\u201d means \u201cgenetic engineering.\u201d<br \/>\nIn a fresh report to parliament seen by K-FM, the committee has accepted to go by the President\u2019s recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the name of the Bill for in instance, the MPs report that, \u201cthe Committee reconsidered this concern and found it necessary to align the title to the contents of the Bill\u201d with the new title being \u201cThe Genetic Engineering and Bio-safety Act, 20l8.\u201d<br \/>\nThe report is due for debate tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Moses Kyeyune.
